Everyone Makes Mistakes When Solving Problems
Love it or hate it…. Most likely hate it. Everyone makes mistakes when doing problems with their homework assignments, practice problems, or the exam. Mistakes can be made. Now, how could we try to prevent these mistakes in the future? Even when there is bound to happen.
Build Better Study Habits and a Problem-Solving Method
Well, there are several ways to go about it, one of which is to study more and fully get your sign notation down if you’re doing math. The other is to get better at having a method that you apply to every problem that you face. Both of which will help prevent mistakes, from my experience. However, the methods take time and effort to build.
Read the Problem Carefully and Write Down Variables
Both ways go hand in hand and require practice to get better at. Some other ways to help you not make mistakes are to read the whole problem statement at least twice so that you can fully comprehend what is being asked in the problem. This also falls under building a method for solving problems. The next thing that you can do is write out some of the variables you know and don’t know. This should help you organize your thoughts and maybe show you a way to solve the problem. Additionally, if you need to retrieve variables from a table, this would be the ideal time to do so as well. Again, this falls under the method category when trying not to make mistakes.
Review Your Work to Catch Small Errors
Once you take these steps every time you solve the problem, it will make things a bit easier, and it will make mistakes a bit harder. On top of this, it would be best practice to review the problem that you just solved step by step if you have time. Sometimes in exams you do not have this luxury. The reason for doing this is to try and find any little mistake you have made while dealing with the problem. One of which could be not carrying the negative sign. I would keep your eye out for these types of mistakes. Especially if your answer did not come out so neatly. That can be a sign that you forgot to carry a sign or some term.
My Personal Method for Solving Problems
Personally, when I approach a problem. Step one is I read about the problem at least twice. Once to just read it and the next time to understand what that problem wants me to solve for, as well as take note of the variables that need to be used to solve the problem. Then I write out the variables and pull values from tables that I need. After this, I write out the questions that I need. Then I start to solve the problem. Once the problem is solved, I review the problem for any errors and fix them. Then I make sure the formatting of the problem solution is good. Finally, I move on. This process is the same for me every time I start a problem. This allows me to mitigate mistakes and keep points on exams and homework, and have confidence that I know how to solve the problem I solved when studying.
Small Study Habits Add Up Over Time
All of which build on each other. I found that now, because I have done this workflow so much, I do not even need to think when applying it to problems. However, at the start it felt like a lot of work, and it is compared to just solving the problem. In the long term, it seemed to pay off in time-savings because the problems were solved more correctly and had fewer mistakes. All of which add up and can drain on you over a long semester of studying. So every little bit seemed to help.

All of these tiny details add up to making you better at catching mistakes. You can even add more to your process than what I have explained in this text. This was merely to give you an idea of how to prevent mistakes when solving problems. Later on, I may do a deeper dive into this topic.
