Summary of Post

  • 101-level classes introduce your major and help you build basic skills for later coursework and careers.

  • If a class feels low-value, use the time productively for simple tasks while still paying attention.

  • Good time management can reduce stress, improve performance, and make college more manageable.

  • Regularly evaluate whether your time use is helping you move closer to your graduation goals.

What 101 Classes Are For

In college, you will be exposed to 101-level classes. These classes are entry-level classes that help you understand more completely what your major will cover and what type of work you can expect once you leave college. In addition, the classes may give you some additional basic skills, like using Excel in a more effective manner.

Use Mandatory Class Time Productively

Since these classes are specific to your major and attendance is often mandatory, you may sometimes feel that the class is not the best use of your time. That was my experience in college. What I suggest is using that time productively while still staying attentive in class. For example, you might complete simple tasks that do not require much mental energy. Light homework could be a good option.

Learning Time Management the Hard Way

Personally, when I was taking these courses, I did not do this at first. Part of that was because I was new to college and had not developed a solid workflow yet. Another part was that I distracted myself with things that were not important. Looking back, I was not using my time wisely. In turn, that was part of why I struggled so much at the beginning of college. Using time well is one of the major factors that I have found can make college not only easier but also more successful.

Decide What Gives You the Most Value

Of course, if you do not fully understand what your major includes, it may be best to sit in class and listen carefully. You may need to regularly evaluate what will provide the most value to you at that time. It really is a matter of opportunity cost. If a class feels less useful in a given moment, think about what else you could be doing with that time that would provide more value while still meeting your responsibilities.

Apply Time Management Throughout College

This is just one example of how time management plays out in college, and I encourage you to think about how to use your time effectively in other areas as well. The better you manage your time, the more room you create for quality study time, relaxation, and socializing. Once you learn to use your time effectively, that skill can carry over into other parts of your life.

Keep Your Goals in Mind

In summary, use your time wisely and keep evaluating whether your choices are moving you closer to your goal of graduating from college. Look for low-value moments in basic-level classes and use them efficiently so you do not have to do as much work later. Finally, ask yourself how you can get more value from your time when it comes to college classes. At the same time, remember that rest matters too, and you do not need to optimize every moment in order to be productive.
